Openquery from SQL Server to Oracle error

I want to insert records into an Oracle 8.03 database from MS SQL 2000. I have created a link and have used OPENQUERY to successfully query my Oracle tables. See example, DEV is the LINK name. I need to insert and update records from MS SQL to Oracle and also I need update MS SQL from
Oracle. Can you please give me a working example of insert and update?

example that works:
select *
from OPENQUERY(DEV, 'SELECT *
FROM USER.ORDERS_ALL')

It makes sense that this update would work, but it got WORSE after running this:

update
OPENQUERY(DEV, 'SELECT *
FROM USER.ORDERS_ALL')
set last_updated_by = 3
where orders_id = 1

ODBC: Msg 0, Level 19, State 1
SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 53 generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. SQL

Server is terminating this process.

Connection Broken

From now on, I cannot get the link to work AT ALL! It is so strange. I have rebooted the machine with SQL Server and the Link on it. I added a new link. (Both show up as valid links.) I have gone into ODBC and tested the connection successfully. The Oracle server I am linked to is up and running and I can select from the table.

The only help I can find on Microsoft that is similar says I need SQL Server 2000 service pack 2, which I already have installed.

Now after getting this error, in SQL Server when I try to display the tables for the linked server in the Enterprise Mgr or run the simple select query (the first above) I get no response at all. The query goes off and 30 minutes later I have to break out of the SQL Query Analyzer or Enterprise Mgr because NOTHING happened except the logs show me as having timed out. I left the machine for hours to see if there were queries that needed to complete or something?? No luck -- it does not give results from the query.
:rolleyes:if you want to do that in the easy way, create view out of table of oracle database in sql server and then insert the view, but take care when you insert into the view you should take in the consideration all fields even if its null values

Good idea, but no luck. Thank you!

UPDATE DEV..USER.ORDERS_ALL

Alternately, this should also work with OPENQUERY (note that Microsoft recommends the 'where 1 = 2' clause to prevent rows from being returned, which would add overhead to the query, and most likely cause the query to fail):

I have used both syntaxes successfully, but not until my dba set up our Ole DB provider to handle Heterogeneous updates/inserts (required a registry change). Hope this helps.

I will try the syntax you suggested early next week (the server crashed and needs new drives).

What do you mean by the above? Is that on the MS SQL Server box? How do you do it and which Ole DB provider?|||I should preface my response by saying that this only concerns you if you are trying to perform changes on the Oracle side as a part of a Sql Server distributed transaction (e.g. a transaction which can be rolled back). If you just want to make updates to the Oracle side, the syntax I have provided should stand on its own.

In my instance, I needed to include my updates/deletes/inserts to Oracle as a part of a Sql Server stored procedure which contained a Distributed Transaction. That way, if anything went wrong either side of the procedure (Oracle or SS), I would be able to roll back transactions in both databases.

SQL Server generally uses the MSDAORA Ole DB provider located on the SQL Server box to talk to Oracle. DTC (Distributed Transaction Coordinator) is the Sql Server component which actually manages the transaction and implements the appropriate Ole DB provider for executing heterogeneous queries.

Each ole db provider has certain properties which can be set that describe what functionality the provider will and won't support. To get distributed transactions to work with the MSDAORA, the ITransactionJoin(see books online for more info on this) property should be set accordingly. I believe this property can be set for the linked server through Enterprise Manager.

FINALLY - what I made reference to in my previous post was a problem we ran into where our MDAC registry settings were not set properly (a lot of things have to be in sync for Distributed Transactions to work). Here is the link on Microsoft's support site on how to do this (very complete!): http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/viewDoc.aspx?docID=KC.Q280106&dialogID=16829074&iterationID=1&sessionID=anonymous|15672521&url=kb;en-us;Q280106

Again, though, if your transactions aren't a part of a distributed transaction, you probably won't have to worry about this part. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Opening a Link in a new window.

Hi

I'm would to link from a report to a second report, I would like the second report to open a new window.

I can open the new window with the samples I found in the Forum (javscript windo open'www.microsoft.com','_Blank'), when I try using the actual report and parameters

it does not work, here is what I code in the link (fx)

=void(window.open('Globals!ReportServerUrl'?/Dirxx/Report1&JParmname=" & Fields!LinkID.Value & ,'_blank',toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status=yes,menubar=no,scrollbar=yes,resizable=yes,copyhistory=no))"

Any suggestion?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I need to do exactly what you mention in your question. I wonder if you found a solution.

="javascrippt:void(window.open('

(misspelled purposely)

First(Fields!linked_files_dir.Value, "DataSet1") + "\Crude\Crude Products.pdf"

','_blank'))"

Thank you.

Hi,

Try this expression in "Jump to URL Section" ->

the targeted report should be in the same folder (Globals!ReportFolder)

=window.open('" & Globals!ReportServerUrl & "?" & Globals!ReportFolder & "/" & "myreport" & "&rs:Command=Render&rc:toolbar=true','','width=800,height=600,left=10,top=10,resizable=1,menubar=no,location=no,status=no'),_top"

Thank you.

I saw your posting on a different thread but my linked documents are on a different location. Changing strategies, I am trying to open the first document on a new window (from a login.aspx page). I don't see an option with rs.render.

Open url in a new window

hi, I got a problem with reporting services 2005.

I have to create a link activated by clicking on an image.

In the image navigation properties I inserted the link in "jump to url" but the problem is that no new window is opened, the url is opened in the initial report page.
I tried to use jscript this way:

javascript:window.open("myurl","", "scrollbars=yes,width=800,height=600,left=0,top=0");

but in this case the url opens in a new window but a blank page is shown in the report page.

How can I solve this problem and open the url in a new window without changing the report page?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my english

="javascript:void window.open('http://yoururl&rs:Command=Render.....and whatever else you need "')"

|||

ok it works!

Thanks a lot for your help

|||

I made the Jump to URL expression as:

=void window.open('http://barn/apx/PortfolioDetail.aspx?linkfield=" & Fields!APX_PortfolioID.Value & "', '_blank')"

The above expression opens a new window correctly when the source report is run from the SSRS ReportServer or Reports (ReportsManager) pages. So far so good. But if the source report is first opened in an HTML frame via the following link, then clicking on the above link (on the source report) does nothing at all (just gives a click sound from IE):

<a href="http://brat/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fAccount+Profile&rs:Command=Render&rc:Zoom=100" target=apcontent><u>Accounts</u></a>

Very perplexing (at least to me). Any ideas on why this could be happening would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

|||

Adding more info to above. On my development machine (XP/SP2), the link is working from a frame also.

So, the link is not working on the production intranet site for some reason. The dev platform is 2005 Reporting Services with the reporting server databases on sql server 2005 on XP/SP2. The production platform is 2005 Reporting Services but the reporting server databases are on sql server 2000 on windows 2003 server.

The data source for the report is identical for both the platform (stored proc on sql 2000). Any ideas? TIA.

Hi, mate, how did you make it work? I used the same code but the link disappeared when I use '=javascript'. I am using SQL 2005 reporting services. I just want make UserID as an URL and when I click it, it open a new window, it just doesn't work.

The SSRS report is hosted by a Report Viewer control in a Web page (like MyPage.aspx).

The Web page is under a sub-folder of the application root (like http://MyApp/Module1).

The link works fine when the page shows up for the first time (http://MyApp/Module1/MyPage.aspx and the report shows up as expected).

However, if the Refresh button of the Report Viewer is pressed, the access path between the application root and page is chopped off (and I will have an error 404 message says Requested URL: /MyApp/MyPage.aspx resource can not be found.

Everything works fine if I change the JavaScript to:

=void window.open('http://MyServer/MyApp/Module1/MyPage.aspx?ContactId=" + CStr(Fields!ContactId.Value) + "','_blank','location=yes,toolbar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=1000')"

The problem with hard coding the full access path is that I have to modify the JavaScript every time when I roll a report from development to production.

I’ve tried a variety of access path strings to make the JavaScript server independent (such as ../Module1/MyPage.aspx, and so on) and have no luck so far.

Can anyone help?

I know it's a while late - but I thought it worth posting something here which I have struggled with for some time in RS.

I have a site with 2 frames - left (named "Menu") for the... you guessed it... Menu. and the right frame called "Body".

I was using several dynamic menu items to open up RS reports.

I went to use this, as per many examples, and it did not work. It just clicked with no action (or with Friendly Error Messages turned on it came up with an error screen with the java<removethis>script in the address bar.

="java<removethis>script:void(window.open('" + Trim(Fields!MY_URL.Value) + "','_blank', 'location=no,toolbar=no,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=800'))"

I figured out after much trial and error that because everything in RS has a target of _top it was causing problems in a frameset. So, the solution which I came up with, and have implemented is as follows:

In the left menu I have added &rc:LinkTarget=Body to the end of all the calls to the report (they populate in the Body frame). Then I use the above javascript for all URL's, and it opens them in a blank window as required.

Hope this may help someone else who struggles with this one.

Cheers,

Open up new window for external URL

I'm trying to use "Jump to URL" to link the report to external web site.

However, I had tried several time to type "target=_blank" together with URL
for "Jump to URL" insides Navigation tab and error was resulted.
Is there any trick required?

my feeling is that the solution here is where you are in another webpage
(not Reporting Services) and want to have this happen. Not when it is using
the jump to url. What you can do (and this is something I just learned this
week) is to use the ability with SP1 to use javascript. For you jump to URL
put in the following expression:
="javascript:void(window.open('http://www.google.com'))"

Open the link in new window

When i giving a url passing some parameter..in Jump to Url of cell navigation properties..

In VS Studio its opening in new window ..but when deployed in server and its opening same browser while my requirement is to open in new window..

You need to set the LinkTarget deviceinfo to "_blank". This can be set using a url parameter or in the rsreportserver.config file.

See this link for more information on setting the device info:

Open report in a new window

Hi,
Does any one know how to open a report that is a link or " jump to
report" in a new window and not instead of the previous report?
Thank you
Avi.Use jump to URL instead of jump to report. Also, to test you will need to
deploy to test.
Here is an example of a Jump to URL link I use. This causes Excel to come up
with the data in a separate window:
="javascript:void(window.open('" & Globals!ReportServerUrl &
"?/SomeFolder/SomeReport&ParamName=" & Parameters!ParamName.Value &
"&rs:Format=CSV&rc:Encoding=ASCII','_blank'))"
Note, if you leave off & "&rs:Format=CSV&rc:Encoding=ASCII' you will have
the report come up in the default which is html.

Where should I write this code?
I did it by clicking specific cell in a table-> properties-> advanced->
navigation and the choose the report I want to jump to and its
parameters.
Thank you.

Open Report Builder and Link to Report Directly?

Hi,

I've created a simple webpart that lists all the reports that a user has created using the Report Builder and next to each line item is an "Edit" link. What I would like to do is open up the Report Builder application and pass a parameter of the report path or something like that so that report builder opens up the report automatically.

Is this possible?

Thanks

Open Navigation Link in a new window

I have a report with a hyperlink. When I go to the navigation tab, it does not give me any options to open the link in a new window. I have a link to show help and I do not want the user to actually move away from the reports
Any ideas? This is such a simple thing..I wonder how MS misses this?

One way of doing this is to use an expression like this for the hyperlink action (Note - I had to insert a blank between 'java' and 'script' otherwise the text would not be visible in the posting):
="java script:void(window.open('http://www.microsoft.com','_blank'))"

Note: be careful with single and double quotes in the expression - especially if you use RDL expressions to concatenate static information with dynamic information from e.g. a field value.

-- Robert

|||The reason it does not work is the built in rendering extension puts "_Top" in the <a href> tag that it renders. Somehow, we need to change that '_Top" to "_blank" while rendering.

You can do this by using URL access to render the report and specifying the rc:LinkTarget parameter. See: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms155395.aspx

Hi, Robert,

All of my users are using http://machine/reports or http://machine/reportserver with IE. Is there anyway to change the default value of LinkTarget at navigation link from _top to _blank in .config file to make this behavior by default?

I tried to modify rsreportserver.config without luck.

I also noticed that the default behavior of SSRS 2000 does allow one to open new window at navigation link (right click -> Open new window). But this has been removed from SSRS 2005 (well, at least its default behavior is not to open a new window).

Thanks.

I have seen this answer "rc:LinkTarget" from multiple sources, but I cannot get it to work. I cannot get the Target attribute to change from _top to _blank or any frame names.

here is my code sample:

Because or report server runs in a framed wrapper the window.open method cannot work either.

any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

Thanks.

One way of doing this is to use an expression like this for the hyperlink action (Note - I had to insert a blank between 'java' and 'script' otherwise the text would not be visible in the posting):
="java script:void(window.open('http://www.microsoft.com','_blank'))"

It's perfect but I coudn't figure out how to do it with a field value like:

"https://www.mysite.com/pdf/" & Fields!SurveyReportNo.Value & ".pdf"

Could you help me Robert ?

Try this:

="java script:void(window.open('https://www.mysite.com/pdf/" & Fields!SurveyReportNo.Value & ".pdf','_blank'))"

-- Robert

Try this:

="java script:void(window.open('https://www.mysite.com/pdf/" & Fields!SurveyReportNo.Value & ".pdf','_blank'))"

-- Robert

Thank you Robert !

It worked like a charm, I'm using SQL 2005 for about 2 months, and it's really difficulty to find good information.

I've bought 2 books from the "dummies" series, but this kind of info is not there :(

Thank you again !

ps-would you know also how to complete this command, hiding all the bars from the browser (address bar, toolbar, etc...)

Never mind, just found it

="java script:void(window.open('https://www.mysite.com/pdf/" & Fields!SurveyReportNo.Value & ".pdf','_blank','toolbar=false'))"

Don't know why, i was using "menu=no"

OO Datamodelling

Hi there,
A while ago I read a thread discussing object-oriented datamodelling.
Can't find it anymore. Anyone can link me to this thread? Anyone know of
sources of interest on the subject?
Tnx,

Online SQL Server resources?

I'm working on some research on online resources for SQL Server programming
and design. If you'd be willing to help, please follow the link below and
take the survey -- it's only 4 questions!

which asks
"How much would you be willing to pay for an online service that helped with
SQL Server database problems (design, programming, query construction) if
the service came with a 100% money-back guarantee?"
I believe microsoft.public.sqlserver.server already comes with a money-back
guarantee.

oops.
Meant to say that I once a problem is hard enough to merit a per-incident
fee, it may already be too hard so solve online.
