Opening Table in Management Studio is very slow

Dear Gurus

When I open a large table (say more than 1,000,000 Rows) in the SSMS by right clicking on the table name, it takes a very big time to fully open the table.More than 20 minutes for 1,000,000 records on a local instance.

SQL Server 2000 EM was extremely faster. Does any one knows a work around?

I need to be able to view and edit the data in SSMS.

Thanks in advance.

Parviz

I do not suggest ever opening a large table like this and editing the data through management studio. It is better to write queries to view the data as needed, and dml statements to update the data as needed.

Opening a new window on clicking a hyperlink

Hi,

We are opening a Crystal Enterprise report in a browser. The report is opened in a .pdf format. We need to make some texts/images appear as hyperlinks. We did so by formatting the concerned objects in the Crystal Reports Designer and specifying the website address. But on clicking the text/image, the website is being opened in the same window. What can we do so that the website gets opened in a new window? Please Help!
We are using Crystal Reports 10.

Thanks,
ManishHi,

Let me rephrase the problem again after some observations.
We have found out that the hyperlink in thus generated pdf file is indeed opening in a new window. But when this pdf file is displayed inside a frame, clicking on the hyperlink is opening in the same window/frame. Please Help.

Regards,
Manishsql

Open url in a new window

hi, I got a problem with reporting services 2005.

I have to create a link activated by clicking on an image.

In the image navigation properties I inserted the link in "jump to url" but the problem is that no new window is opened, the url is opened in the initial report page.
I tried to use jscript this way:

javascript:window.open("myurl","", "scrollbars=yes,width=800,height=600,left=0,top=0");

but in this case the url opens in a new window but a blank page is shown in the report page.

How can I solve this problem and open the url in a new window without changing the report page?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my english

="javascript:void window.open('http://yoururl&rs:Command=Render.....and whatever else you need "')"

|||

ok it works!

Thanks a lot for your help

|||

I made the Jump to URL expression as:

=void window.open('http://barn/apx/PortfolioDetail.aspx?linkfield=" & Fields!APX_PortfolioID.Value & "', '_blank')"

The above expression opens a new window correctly when the source report is run from the SSRS ReportServer or Reports (ReportsManager) pages. So far so good. But if the source report is first opened in an HTML frame via the following link, then clicking on the above link (on the source report) does nothing at all (just gives a click sound from IE):

<a href="http://brat/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fAccount+Profile&rs:Command=Render&rc:Zoom=100" target=apcontent><u>Accounts</u></a>

Very perplexing (at least to me). Any ideas on why this could be happening would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Adding more info to above. On my development machine (XP/SP2), the link is working from a frame also.

So, the link is not working on the production intranet site for some reason. The dev platform is 2005 Reporting Services with the reporting server databases on sql server 2005 on XP/SP2. The production platform is 2005 Reporting Services but the reporting server databases are on sql server 2000 on windows 2003 server.

The data source for the report is identical for both the platform (stored proc on sql 2000). Any ideas? TIA.

Hi, mate, how did you make it work? I used the same code but the link disappeared when I use '=javascript'. I am using SQL 2005 reporting services. I just want make UserID as an URL and when I click it, it open a new window, it just doesn't work.

|||Yeahhh!I got it working now.Thanks folks!|||

I have a piece of JavaScript for Jump to URL like the following:

=void window.open('MyPage.aspx?ContactId=" + CStr(Fields!ContactId.Value) + "','_blank','location=yes,toolbar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=1000')"

The SSRS report is hosted by a Report Viewer control in a Web page (like MyPage.aspx).

The Web page is under a sub-folder of the application root (like http://MyApp/Module1).

The link works fine when the page shows up for the first time (http://MyApp/Module1/MyPage.aspx and the report shows up as expected).

However, if the Refresh button of the Report Viewer is pressed, the access path between the application root and page is chopped off (and I will have an error 404 message says Requested URL: /MyApp/MyPage.aspx resource can not be found.

Everything works fine if I change the JavaScript to:

=void window.open('http://MyServer/MyApp/Module1/MyPage.aspx?ContactId=" + CStr(Fields!ContactId.Value) + "','_blank','location=yes,toolbar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=1000')"

The problem with hard coding the full access path is that I have to modify the JavaScript every time when I roll a report from development to production.

I’ve tried a variety of access path strings to make the JavaScript server independent (such as ../Module1/MyPage.aspx, and so on) and have no luck so far.

Can anyone help?

I know it's a while late - but I thought it worth posting something here which I have struggled with for some time in RS.

I have a site with 2 frames - left (named "Menu") for the... you guessed it... Menu. and the right frame called "Body".

I was using several dynamic menu items to open up RS reports.

I went to use this, as per many examples, and it did not work. It just clicked with no action (or with Friendly Error Messages turned on it came up with an error screen with the java<removethis>script in the address bar.

="java<removethis>script:void(window.open('" + Trim(Fields!MY_URL.Value) + "','_blank', 'location=no,toolbar=no,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=800'))"

I figured out after much trial and error that because everything in RS has a target of _top it was causing problems in a frameset. So, the solution which I came up with, and have implemented is as follows:

In the left menu I have added &rc:LinkTarget=Body to the end of all the calls to the report (they populate in the Body frame). Then I use the above javascript for all URL's, and it opens them in a blank window as required.

Hope this may help someone else who struggles with this one.

Cheers,

Open Table Query's Capabilities

I'm using the Client Tools installation.
The Open Table Query feature on a table (by right clicking on the table) is
rather userful for non-technical people as it is visual and one can easily
set up some queries without actually key in the SQL code.
Somehow I just can't find the features that I need :
(1) save this query so that I can reuse it. (Query Analyzer can do it but
then it is not visual)
(2) to output the result as a file in some path.(Again Query Analyzer can do
it )
Hope someone can share their experience on the above .> The Open Table Query feature on a table (by right clicking on the table)

IMHO, Enterprise Manager is somewhere between non-technical and technical.
The query designer can help someone with cursory database knowledge retrieve
data but doesn't support some of the more advanced SQL constructs. This is
why many technical users prefer Query Analyzer.
Be aware that SQL Server client tools are not really intended to be used for
end-user ad-hoc reporting. Consider an application like Excel or the Report
Builder feature of SQL 2005 Reporting Services for end-user ad-hoc queries.

> (1) save this query so that I can reuse it. (Query Analyzer can do it but

Copy/paste the generated SQL and save to a file. To reuse that query, paste
the SQL into a query designer SQL pane and click the check SQL syntax button
to refresh the GUI.

If you don't want to use QA for this task, you can copy the result grid,
paste into Excel and save in the format you prefer.
Hope this helps.

way of outputing directly.
One more question :
When right click on either the SQL or Diagram pane after Open Table Query,
there is a "Save As" and "Save" but when I click on them, there is no
response at all. Is that a bug ?

This is documented behavior. From the SQL 2000 Books Online
<Excerpt
href="vdtsql.chm::/ _visual_database_tools_usage_considerati
ons.htm">
Although Query Designer provides menu options for saving, these options are
disabled.
</Excerpt>
The chapter also mentions the copy/paste method to print/save results and
queries. I believe the Query Designer tool is intended to be used as a
visual method to create SQL queries and not much else.
Hope this helps.

Only sysadmin can do that.. but I am one

Hi all.
We recently have been getting strange messages from SQL Server. Going into
EM and right clicking the server and selecting properties... I get a message
saying that "Only members of the sysadmin role can access this feature."
But I have administrator priveleges on the machine.
I try logging in with the SA username and password. It works but it also
tells me that I am not a sysadmin.
I tried re-installing the service pack but it won't even let me start
stating that I need to be a sysadmin to install it.
So I tried re-installing SQL Server and restoring my databases... still no
luck.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what it going on?

You will have to check who the instance is registered under in EM, by
editing the registration.
If that is ok, you may want to check who is actually in the system
administrators role using
EXEC sp_helpsrvrolemember 'sysadmin'
BUILTIN\Administrators may have been removed. sa can't be removed from the
