Opening a URL in reporting services 2005 opens whatever IE window

How do I get reporting services 2005 to open a new IE window when touching a URL. Otherwise it grabs whatever one is open (not any order) which writes over what I was viewing. This is extremely frustrating. Our company uses LOTUS notes sametime as a netmeeting software which uses IE and it keeps choosing that window and "knocking" me out of the meeting. What can I do?

One thing that might work is unchecking the "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts" option under "Browsing" section located on the "Advanced" tab of IE's Internet Options. The down-side to this fix is that it only affects your user profile. This fix would have to be performed for each user's profile. I'll play around with RS and see if I can't trick it to force a new window.

Sincerely,

Micheal

Open url in a new window

hi, I got a problem with reporting services 2005.

I have to create a link activated by clicking on an image.

In the image navigation properties I inserted the link in "jump to url" but the problem is that no new window is opened, the url is opened in the initial report page.
I tried to use jscript this way:

javascript:window.open("myurl","", "scrollbars=yes,width=800,height=600,left=0,top=0");

but in this case the url opens in a new window but a blank page is shown in the report page.

How can I solve this problem and open the url in a new window without changing the report page?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my english

="javascript:void window.open('http://yoururl&rs:Command=Render.....and whatever else you need "')"

|||

ok it works!

Thanks a lot for your help

|||

I made the Jump to URL expression as:

=void window.open('http://barn/apx/PortfolioDetail.aspx?linkfield=" & Fields!APX_PortfolioID.Value & "', '_blank')"

The above expression opens a new window correctly when the source report is run from the SSRS ReportServer or Reports (ReportsManager) pages. So far so good. But if the source report is first opened in an HTML frame via the following link, then clicking on the above link (on the source report) does nothing at all (just gives a click sound from IE):

<a href="http://brat/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2fAccount+Profile&rs:Command=Render&rc:Zoom=100" target=apcontent><u>Accounts</u></a>

Very perplexing (at least to me). Any ideas on why this could be happening would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

|||

Adding more info to above. On my development machine (XP/SP2), the link is working from a frame also.

So, the link is not working on the production intranet site for some reason. The dev platform is 2005 Reporting Services with the reporting server databases on sql server 2005 on XP/SP2. The production platform is 2005 Reporting Services but the reporting server databases are on sql server 2000 on windows 2003 server.

The data source for the report is identical for both the platform (stored proc on sql 2000). Any ideas? TIA.

Hi, mate, how did you make it work? I used the same code but the link disappeared when I use '=javascript'. I am using SQL 2005 reporting services. I just want make UserID as an URL and when I click it, it open a new window, it just doesn't work.

|||Yeahhh!I got it working now.Thanks folks!|||

I have a piece of JavaScript for Jump to URL like the following:

=void window.open('MyPage.aspx?ContactId=" + CStr(Fields!ContactId.Value) + "','_blank','location=yes,toolbar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=1000')"

The SSRS report is hosted by a Report Viewer control in a Web page (like MyPage.aspx).

The Web page is under a sub-folder of the application root (like http://MyApp/Module1).

The link works fine when the page shows up for the first time (http://MyApp/Module1/MyPage.aspx and the report shows up as expected).

However, if the Refresh button of the Report Viewer is pressed, the access path between the application root and page is chopped off (and I will have an error 404 message says Requested URL: /MyApp/MyPage.aspx resource can not be found.

Everything works fine if I change the JavaScript to:

=void window.open('http://MyServer/MyApp/Module1/MyPage.aspx?ContactId=" + CStr(Fields!ContactId.Value) + "','_blank','location=yes,toolbar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=1000')"

The problem with hard coding the full access path is that I have to modify the JavaScript every time when I roll a report from development to production.

I’ve tried a variety of access path strings to make the JavaScript server independent (such as ../Module1/MyPage.aspx, and so on) and have no luck so far.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

I know it's a while late - but I thought it worth posting something here which I have struggled with for some time in RS.

I have a site with 2 frames - left (named "Menu") for the... you guessed it... Menu. and the right frame called "Body".

I was using several dynamic menu items to open up RS reports.

I went to use this, as per many examples, and it did not work. It just clicked with no action (or with Friendly Error Messages turned on it came up with an error screen with the java<removethis>script in the address bar.

="java<removethis>script:void(window.open('" + Trim(Fields!MY_URL.Value) + "','_blank', 'location=no,toolbar=no,left=100,top=100,height=600,width=800'))"

I figured out after much trial and error that because everything in RS has a target of _top it was causing problems in a frameset. So, the solution which I came up with, and have implemented is as follows:

In the left menu I have added &rc:LinkTarget=Body to the end of all the calls to the report (they populate in the Body frame). Then I use the above javascript for all URL's, and it opens them in a blank window as required.

Hope this may help someone else who struggles with this one.

Cheers,

AndyCJ

Open reports with report builder

Hi!

We have a "folder hiriarchy" in reporting services with permission for different users to only create reports in their own folder. However, it would be nice if they (in report builder) could open eachothers reports, modify them and then save them in theri own folder. In this case, if they find a useful report that someone else has created, they could just make their own small modifications and save it in their own folder.

The problem is that I cant't seem to find a securitysetting that allow this. Either they can create/modify/delete the reports in a "folder" or they can't even open them in report builder...

Is there a solution to my problem?

Open report in new window: window.open method gives error

Hi,

I am using SSRS Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Designers
Version 9.00.1399.00. I want to open linked report in new window.

I tried whats mentioned in http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=240172&SiteID=1 but i get an error on Window.Open method.

How do I solve the problem?

Thanks

to display a linked report in a new window, right-click on the text box containing the link text and go to 'properties', then the navigation tab. In the 'jump to URL' field enter the full path to linked report on the report server as follows:

http://<servername>/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx?%2f<parent folder>%2f<name of linked report>&rs:Command=Render

you will need to change the text between the <angle brackets> to suit your network etc. This opens the linked report in a new window (works for me anyway:)
Notice that the URL above is slightly different to the usual URL that displays in the report server address bar - this version hides most of the report server window from the user, so they only see the report itself and its parameters (if any) - quite useful IMHO

Open or Download a file in Sql Reports Resources using Report Service API

Using the reporting service web service to get the file path for a reports and the report viewer control on a Web page, it is possible to view reports. This works fine. I built a tree view that shows the reports. I also show resource files ( like .xls or .doc files ) that a user may have uploaded to the report directory. I show these filenames in the treeview as well as actual sql reports. If the user clicks on a report name, I set the path in the report viewer control and the report is rendered.

Now I would also like the user to be able to download or open any xls or doc file that may also be in the report directory from this web application.

Is this possible?

Normally in the Report Manager it uses Resources.aspx to download or open the file.

Is there any way to access these files programatically?

thanks

Okay I found the answer, it is using the Report Web ServicegetResourceContents()

Only first row appearing

New to Reporting services, I am trying to create a simple header/
detail report. I am not using subreports due to problems with
mysterious pagebreaking before a lengthy subreport. However, my
problem is now everything looks good in the preview screen, but in a
print or print layout I am only seeing the first header in the group
and the first row for that header.

It sounds kind-of like you have possibly set 'Page break at end' as
part of your grouping (if applicable). Right-click the table control
(if applicable) and select Properties. Select the Groups tab, then
select the 'Edit...' button and uncheck 'Page break at end.' Hope this
helps.

I do not have any page breaks set. I could see that happening, but
I'm not seeing any other records. In preview I have 4 groups with
2-30 records in each group. On print layout ALL I get is the header
and first record of the first group.

Only able to access Report Manager as Administrator

Hi,

I have Reporting Services set up with the permissions (via Right Click Server/Permisions in SSMS or System Role Assignments in Report Manager) set as follows:

BUILTIN\Administrators - System Administrator

When logged in as an administrator I am able to access Report Manager, no problem.

However, I want to add a new group so that non-administrators can access Report Manager. However, whatever new item I add in the permissions appears to have no effect. For instance, if I add a permission for Users, i.e. :

BUILTIN\Administrators - System Administrator

BUILTIN\Users - System Administrator

I can still only access Report Manager as an administrator.. Any other user just gets the blank page.

I have tried creating a custom group, Report Users, with the same result.

I checked IIS to ensure anonymous access was turned off (this was an issue I had earlier on in my setup - it was turned on, but is now firmly off).

I don't know much about IIS, but I guess the problem is there somewhere. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be and how I get around it?

Thanks very much in advance

Andy

Hi Andy! Reporting Services is Active Directory (AD) aware. If an AD group has been created (ex: reportusers), you can grant access to that group by going to the Home Folder in Report Manager and clicking on properties and then "New Role Assignment" where you would put something like this: DomainName\GroupID (ex: mydomain\reportusers).

If you are not using Active Directory, then please explain where (Report Manager or SQL Server Management Studio) you are creating your groups and how you have added security and we'll go from there.

Hi Chuck,

Thank you so much for your reply.

I have to confess to not being an expert at Windows Server configuration.. and I'm not sure whether the server I am using employs Active Directory.. How can I tell?

I am creating the users in Admin Tools/Computer Management/Local Users and Groups.

I now have a user (MyUser) which is a member of a group (Report Users).

I have added this group in Management Studio (Right Click server/Permissions) as a System User. I am also able to add it via Report Manager/Site Security, it has the same effect.

What is interesting is that if I allow this group System Administrator access in Man. Studio, and I then log on as that user, I appear to have full access as I do for actual administrator users, but only within Management Studio. I still get the standard blank page (i.e. just "Home" bar but no visible reports) in Internet Explorer when connecting to Report Manager!

So there would appear to be some mismatch between what permissions I have within Report Manager versus Management Studio. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that there's either some IIS configuration that's wrong, or something in the security setup is blocking access via a web interface.

Hope this sheds some light on things.

Thanks again for your interest

There are three types of Authentification in Reporting Services:

1) Integrated Windows Authentification (Active Directory aware) is the default authentification method for the Report Server and Report Manager virtual directories.

2) Anonymous access (only suggested if used with security extensions). Anonymous access limites your ability to vary role assignment because all users will access the Report Server under the Anonymous user account.

3) Basic Authentification, which should only be used with a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection because Basic Authentification sends username and passwords to the server in clear text, which could be picked up with a network sniffer.

The Integrated Windows Authentification method is preferred and widely used. Your network administrator can setup Active Directory groups on the Domain Controller, which you can then grant those groups access to Reporting Services. If you network users have Unix, Mac, Novell or Linux accounts (non-Windows accounts) then you will need to go with Forms Authentification. Forms Authentification directs a request from an unauthenticated user to an HTML form, where they are prompted to enter a username and password. I have not used this method but many in this forum have and a quick search of the forum should return several useful posts.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks very much for the information,

I am using Integrated Windows Authentication. The users I am dealing with are local to this server, it does not appear to be a domain server or to be part of a domain.

I can understand that my problem is to do with the security setup, but I can't get my head around what the difference is between accessing from Internet Explorer and accessing via Management Studio. It must, surely, be something to do with security for IIS rather than Reporting Services itself?

If so, can you give me any clues as to which permissions I should check and where? I can't tell whether it's withing IIS or some local policy on the server that is blocking the access.

Thanks again for your help and interest.

I eventually found out what this was..

It was nothing to do with Windows authentication - as I suspected because the access I granted worked in SSMS, but not via the web interface.

It was just that I had to add Browser access for my users via the Report Manager web interface .. on the home page/properties/New Role Assignment .. Once I did that everything worked as I had hoped.

A previous installation I carried out didn't require this.. I suspect that all users were granted Browser access by default, which wasn't the case here.

Thanks for your interest Chuck!

Andy, I'm sorry I didn't suggest to verify the users had rights to the home page properties section first as this is required before giving them rights to any sub-folders you may create. I'm glad you figured this out and hope you enjoy reporting services as much as I have.

only 1 data row shows up in preview - should have 10

I am relatively new to Reporting services. I have a real basic dataset
select * from tbl1
tbl1 contains 10 rows and 6 fields. I have 6 textboxes in the layout view.
I linked each textbox to a field in the dataset. When I go to preview, I
only see one row of the 10 rows and only 1 page. What do I need to do to
show the rest of the rows (on the same page)? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
RichWell, I found part of my problem. When I right-click on a textbox I select
"expression" which brings up a dialog box with a variety of selections. I
want to select Fields but see a message that the report has not been linked
to a dataset. So I go to the Dataset option and select fields from there.
But each of those fields has the "First" function leading the expression.
So now my question is: how do you link a dataset to the report?

Toolbox and that is where select your dataset.
