Opening SQL Server Express files with SQL Server Management Studio (2005)

I am trying to open a SS2005 Express file with the full version of SQL Server Management Studio but it will not let me. I cannot install SQL Server Express Management Studio as they cannot co-exist on the same machine!

I can open the file in Visual Studio but itb will not allow me to change table names or move tables etc to another SQL Express database.

Is there an addin tool that will allow me to work on these files with SQL 2005 Studio or any other tool that will allow me to change table names and move tables/data between SQL Express files?

You cannot open database files in Management Studio.

You have to attach the database to your SQL Express in order to connect to it with Management Studio.

i think what you are refering is User Instance feature of SQL Server Express. This feature is only available in Express edition. So you may change the connection string which connecting to otherversion.

attach the mdf and ldf file using sp_attach_db and then you can view the database in Management Studio

Opening sql files opens new instance of SQL Management Studio

Hi Folks,

I'm sure this has been answered before but all my searches for this problem don't find what I need. It's a quirk but driving me nuts.

If I have sql management studio open and I view a sql file from Vault, or double-click it in explorer, it always opens a new instance of mgmt studio. I open 5 sql files, 5 instances of mgmt studio.

How do I tell my system to reuse mgmt studio to open sql files if it's open?

Thanks in Advance,

-David

What version of SQL Server Management Studio do you have?

9.00.1399 = RTM
9.00.2047 = SP1
9.00.3042 = SP2

Opening password protected Excel files

I have a stored procedure in which I am importing data from a password protected Excel file to a SQL table. The file comes from our client and the password cannot be removed before sending, per his company policy.

I would like to create a DTS package to open the file and import the data. Is there a way to pass the password to the DTS package?

Thanks!May refer to this KBA (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q211378).|||I can do this if I am using Excel, but I need to do it from a stored procedure. Is this possible using TSQL?

Thanks!|||Honestly I never tried, you may search under SQL DTS (http://www.sqldts.com) for further information.|||I got it!!! One of my coworkers (who was out when I needed the answer yesterday) had the solution!

dtsrun /Sservername /Uuid /Ppwd /Npackagename /AFileName:8= excelfilename /APassword:8=excelpwd

:-)|||Good keep it up, your reply help others.

open mdf files w/out sql server

I am trying to assist a client who had a sql server app on a computer that crashed. All that is left is the MDF files.
Is there anyway to open/ export these files without having SQL server?No, but assuming that the MDF and LDF files are small (less than 2 Gb), you could install MSDE 2000 or SQL Express 2005, either of which are available at no charge and would allow you to at least read the files.

Beware, an MDF by itself is a dangerous thing... Be very careful that you understand what you are doing, since it is very easy to get the wrong answer quickly when you're only playing with half a deck... The MDF and LDF files form a working pair in SQL Server. It is dangerous to work with just one of them.

Open File From Report?

Hello,

I am trying to open a file on a network drive from a report. The file's location that I need to open is stored in the db for each record. I have tried using javascript to open a new window using theFile:/// prefix. I have been able to open a new windows and navigate to a URL in this fashion by using a javascript window.open call and placing it in the navigation tab of the textbox. When I try this with a file, however, I get an access denied message. I was thinking to try opening the file by using the System.Diagnostic.Process.Start() method from code, but I'm not sure how to wire that up to the OnClick event of the textbox on the report. Does anyone have any ideas?

HI, ski081:

You can have a try to use the UNC path in the Navigate to the URL in the new windows:

Online SQL Files?

Good morning,
I'm trying to make files I've placed on a SQL server publicly accessible from the WWW. I put them in a folder where other documents are located but the files are not online. I know I must publish them, but I'm not exactly sure on how to go about it.As you have posted a question in the articles section it is being moved to SQL Forum.
